Fill the Bucket

Fill the Bucket Event Raised $15,000 for Meridian Police Officer

The community rallied together this weekend to raise money to purchase a tractor for Officer Mikowski

Meridian, Idaho (August 20, 2018) – Meridian Police Officer, Kyle Mikowski, was involved in a foot pursuit that resulted in gunfire and was injured while on duty last month. Kyle is Meridian’s first police officer shot and injured while on duty. He is a ‘cowboy’ at heart and lives on a 10-acre ranch with his wife and young daughter. Kyle was shot in both legs which has gravely affected his ability to work around the ranch.

The Meridian Police Department and The Village at Meridian hosted a fundraiser to rally the community around this family to buy a tractor to help make daily tasks easier on their ranch. Several hundred people came out in support on Saturday and raised $15,698.03 at the event, raising more than enough money to buy the tractor for the Mikowski family. The additional money will go to the Injured and Fallen Officer Fund. Community members brought cash and check donations to help “fill the bucket” of the tractor, as well as online donations through a GoFundMe page. In addition to these donations, Kubota Tractor Corporation and Idaho Tractor Inc. contributed a $10,000 donation making the grand total $25,623.03.

“The community support behind something like the Fill the Bucket event reminds us of what an honor it is to serve a city like Meridian,” said Tracy Basterrechea, deputy chief of police with the Meridian Police Department.  “It is often said you realize who your real friends are in a time of need and an event like this drives home the feeling of community and support our officers enjoy.  The Mikowski family has been overwhelmed and amazed by the outpouring of support for them during this time and this tractor will certainly lighten the load for them as they continue the day to day work on their ranch.”

The tractor was delivered to the Mikowski family directly following the event. A huge thank you to the community for supporting Officer Mikowski and the Meridian Police Department at this event.
